Introduction
The capital of Oman, Muscat is a strong option at number 5. It offers a high quality of life with a friendly population, peaceful environment, rich cultural heritage, and beautiful natural scenery coupled with same low tax, good schools, healthcare and islamic infrastructure that are found in the rest of the Gulf. The cost of living is also notably lower than in the UAE but the economy is smaller so expat jobs are harder to find.. As with the UAE, the main downside is the lack of long-term immigration options as Omani citizenship is difficult to obtain and there are a good long-term residency by investment options.
Moving There
Citizenship: Omani citizenship is difficult to obtain and generally granted after 20 years of residency alongside having knowledge of Arabic and renouncing previous citizenship. Other options are descent, marriage or naturalisation but there are strict criteria for each of these.
Residence: For 5 year residency permit, you need to invest OMR 250,000 (USD 650,000) in government bonds, a local business or real estate. To obtain a ten-year residence permit, you must invest over OMR 500,000 (USD 1.3 million).
Work Permit: Work permits can be easily obtained with sponsorship from a company in Oman. Following a medical examination, your employer will apply for your Work Visa. Typical processing times range from 1 - 2 months.
Relocating: We recommend using Move One Inc. for comprehensive relocation services, including visa assistance, home search, and settling-in services.
Employment Opportunities
Muscat’s main industries include oil and gas, finance, construction, and tourism. Here are some great local jobs that we found:
There are also many remote jobs particularly in tech where you can base yourself in Dubai:
Education and Healthcare
Education: Muscat has a range of educational institutions, including public schools and private international schools. Emigrant children can enroll in state schools, but many prefer private schools, which cost between OMR 1,500 and OMR 5,000 per year (approximately $3,900 to $13,000). Recommended schools include The Sultan’s School and British School Muscat.
Healthcare: The healthcare system in Muscat includes public hospitals and numerous private hospitals providing high-quality care. Private healthcare can be expensive, with costs ranging from OMR 10 to OMR 50 per consultation (approximately $26 to $130). Recommended hospitals include Royal Hospital and Muscat Private Hospital.
